And so the friendly debate began. My partner prefers the Mounds bar, while I’m firmly on team Almond Joy. These bars struck the perfect balance for both of us: gooey and chewy, with just the right amount of coconut and a satisfying crunch from toasted almonds (on my side, of course).
Be warned: these are very rich. That’s not a complaint—far from it. They’re intensely satisfying, so it helps to cut them into small squares and top each with a single toasted almond if you want Almond Joy-style bites. I sliced them into larger bars the first time and found we needed tall glasses of milk afterward, but it was totally worth it.
I have several variations of these classic bars, and this version is one of my favorites because it uses very few ingredients yet delivers a lot of flavor. They’re quick to assemble and capture the familiar taste of Almond Joy and Mounds candy bars layered over a buttery graham cracker crust.
Think chocolate, sweetened coconut, and toasted almonds over a crisp crust—delicious and nostalgic.
Since the recipe uses only one bag of chocolate chips, use a good-quality chocolate. I prefer Ghirardelli, but choose milk, semi-sweet, or dark based on your preference. The few ingredients mean each one has to be excellent: use fresh, sweetened flaked coconut and avoid low-quality brands that can be dry or stale. Fresh coconut keeps the texture moist and flavorful.
For the almonds and other nuts, store them in an airtight container or in the freezer when possible. Nuts can go rancid quickly once opened, which affects flavor. For the graham cracker crust, I often use pre-packaged graham cracker crumbs for a consistent, fine texture, but you can grind whole crackers if you prefer—just make them very fine.
If you’re planning holiday treats or need a quick, crowd-pleasing dessert that uses minimal ingredients, save or print this Almond Joy vs. Mounds Magic Bars recipe. The pan yields many rich bars, so small portions go a long way. They truly taste like the candy bars and are always a hit—enjoy and happy baking!
