if only there were a scratch and sniff app, so you could smell this!
Ever heard of an apple-pear? I hadn’t either until last fall.

cute little apple-pear
On my routine bi-weekly trip to Costco I was browsing produce. I’m the designated pie baker for Thanksgiving, and I usually bring the same two pies every year: apple and pumpkin. One year I tried to change things up and got politely booed out of the kitchen — our family is very traditional about the Thanksgiving meal. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.
Still, last year I figured a small twist wouldn’t hurt. Alongside the pumpkin pie, I made a pie with the apple-pears I found at Costco. It was a hit.
New tradition?
I think so!
A few weeks later my mom and I visited a fall open house at a charming store in Omaha where I spotted the coolest pie keeper. I loved it — and I bought it. My mom teases me that no one ever knows what to get me for Christmas, but fall is pie season, and I couldn’t wait.

the pie keeper… c’mon… you would have bought it, too, wouldn’t you?
That same week three pie-related things lined up:
1. I found the perfect pie keeper
2. Costco stocked apple-pears
3. Lark’s Country Heart issued a challenge to use nutmeg, which is an ingredient in the pie
If that’s not a calling to bake a pie, I don’t know what is.
