This lemon disinfectant is a go-to for everyday touch-ups. I don’t always have time for deep cleaning, so I rely on a quick, reliable spray to keep counters, sinks, and other high-touch areas fresh between more thorough cleanings. It’s easy to make, inexpensive, and uses items you likely already have at home.

I use this spray on kitchen counters after cooking, on cutting boards to reduce lingering food odors, and in bathrooms for sinks and tubs. It also works well in the fridge to neutralize odors. Adding lemon essential oil boosts cleaning power and leaves a bright, fresh scent.

Because this disinfectant is made from simple household ingredients, it’s non-toxic and more environmentally friendly than many commercial cleaners. Keep a spray bottle near food prep areas and in bathrooms for fast, convenient cleaning whenever you need it.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 4 cups hot water
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 4 drops lemon essential oil (optional for extra cleaning strength and scent)

Directions:

  • In a small bucket or bowl, combine the white vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. Stir gently until the baking soda dissolves.
  • Squeeze the juice from the lemon into the mixture, then add the rind for extra natural aroma and cleaning power.
  • Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then strain it through a fine sieve to remove the rind and any pulp.
  • Add the lemon essential oil, if using, and stir to combine.
  • Pour the finished solution into a clean spray bottle and label it. Shake before each use.

This disinfectant is ideal for routine cleaning of countertops, cutting boards, sinks, tubs, and other surfaces. Because it contains vinegar, avoid using it on natural stone surfaces like marble or granite, which can be damaged by acidic cleaners. For most other surfaces, it’s a safe, effective, and pleasantly scented alternative to chemical cleaners.
