One of my favorite designs to pipe onto a cupcake is the buttercream rose. It’s elegant, versatile, and always creates a beautiful presentation. Recently I shared my fresh orange cake and orange curd frosting recipe, and I finished those cupcakes with piped roses—the same technique I used on a friend’s daughter’s birthday cake. The result really complements the flavors and looks lovely.
I had several requests for a step-by-step tutorial on piping realistic buttercream roses, so I set aside some frosting and a few spare cupcakes to make a video demonstration. Seeing the motion and angles makes the technique easier to understand. If you have questions after watching, please leave a comment and I’ll respond. Someday I hope to offer a live tutorial, too.
I hope this decorating tutorial inspires you. I’d love to see photos of the roses you create!
List of Materials:
- Disposable piping bags
- Wilton 2D jumbo piping tip (or similar petal-style tip)
- Two gel colors in shades that complement your frosting (I used pinks to pair with a light orange-tinted frosting)
- Your choice of frosting and cupcakes
Below is the video demonstration that walks through the piping technique step by step. Watch the angles and hand placement as you practice on a spare cupcake until you feel comfortable with the motion.
