Ingredients
Homemade Hot Dog Chili
- 1 pound ground beef
- 3 onions, for chili
- 4 tablespoons mustard
- 3 teaspoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 cup ketchup
- salt, to taste
- ¼ cup water, as needed
Hot Dogs
- 12 hot dogs
- 12 hot dog buns
- 1⅔ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 large onion, for topping
Instructions
Hot Dog Chili
- Finely dice 3 onions.
- Brown 1 pound ground beef, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks. Adding about ¼ cup water while cooking helps the meat break up evenly.
- Drain the cooked meat.
- Combine the cooked meat, diced onions, 4 tablespoons mustard, 3 teaspoons sugar, 2 teaspoons chili powder, 1 cup ketchup, and salt to taste in a medium saucepan. Stir until blended and simmer over low heat for 1 hour.
- If the chili becomes too thick, thin with small amounts of water while it simmers until you reach the desired consistency.
Hot Dogs
- Chop 1 large onion for topping.
- Grill or boil 12 hot dogs until cooked through, according to your preference.
- Place each hot dog in a bun and top with chili, 1⅔ cups shredded cheddar cheese, chopped onion, and any other toppings you like.
