Eat This: Simple Meals You’ll Actually Crave

Just Eat This Crab Fritters
Crab and Corn Fritters

The first time this truck rolled up to my office, its name nearly made me walk away. “Just Eat This” sounded like a carnival stand or some competitive-eating gimmick — not exactly promising. But I was hungry and tired of bottled water for lunch, so curiosity (and appetite) won.

On a whim I ordered the special: corn and crab fritters. Ordinarily I avoid fritters — they can be greasy and disappointingly sparse on the main ingredient. These were the opposite. They were packed with crab and sweet corn, fried to a golden crisp without excessive oil. They tasted fresh, were surprisingly hearty, and priced under $8. I could only finish half because they were so satisfying.

Now, whenever the truck shows up, I secretly hope the special will be crab-and-corn fritters again.

Despite the fritters, the truck is best known for something else: chicken and waffles. I didn’t try it right away, but after the fifth visit I noticed they often run out of this dish by early afternoon. That’s a good sign.

The chicken-and-waffles dish is excellent. A thick Belgian-style waffle supports a crisp, boneless fried chicken breast, all finished with a creamy maple-mustard sauce that balances sweet and tangy. The portion comes with a side — I picked macaroni and cheese and happily surrendered my afternoon to a pleasant food coma.

The mac and cheese is the creamy stovetop kind, rich and comforting. If you enjoy classic comfort sides, it’s worth ordering.

TL;DR:

Ignore the odd name. The truck serves well-executed, hearty comfort food. If it’s your first visit, try the chicken and waffles — just be prepared for something filling.

Value:

Good. Prices are generally lower than many food trucks, and the portions reflect solid value.

Wait time:

Moderate. They take a little time to prepare made-to-order items, but it’s reasonable and you won’t be kept waiting forever.

Staff:

Friendly and upbeat. The person at the window is consistently welcoming, even when a crowd descends at lunchtime.
