Make Your Own Rich Simple Syrup

Making rich simple syrup at home is easy and rewarding. Use a 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio for a richer syrup that adds body to cocktails. Combine 1 cup water and 2 cups granulated sugar in a small saucepan. Bring the water to a gentle boil, add the sugar, and stir until fully dissolved. Remove from heat and let cool. Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to six weeks.

Mint it Up!

Mint it Up!

To intensify the mint flavor, add 1 cup of mint leaves (no stems) to the warm rich simple syrup and steep for 15–20 minutes. Remove the mint promptly to avoid bitterness, then cool and store. Use the mint-infused syrup 1:1 in place of the plain rich syrup in recipes.

Let’s Talk About Bubbles

Choosing the right bubbly water affects texture and flavor. All sparkling waters contain carbon dioxide for fizz, but they differ in mineral content and mouthfeel. Here are common types:

  • Seltzer: Plain water carbonated with CO2, with a neutral flavor and straightforward fizz.
  • Club Soda / Soda Water: Carbonated water with added minerals such as sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate for a slightly different taste and mouthfeel.
  • Sparkling Water: A general term for any carbonated water.
  • Mineral Water: Naturally carbonated water with distinctive minerals and a textured mouthfeel; the mineral profile is consistent at the source.

Sparkling Bubbles

Bubbling Water Recommendations

Here are a few sparkling water choices that work well in cocktails:

  • Topo Chico Mineral Water: A crisp mineral water with strong carbonation and a distinctive texture—great in tequila and light cocktails.
  • SodaStream: Convenient for making bubbly water at home and reduces single-use plastic.
  • San Pellegrino Natural Mineral Water: Fine bubbles and a delicate texture, ideal for spritzers when you want a Champagne-like feel.
  • Spindrift Sparkling Water: Flavored with real fruit, it adds subtle natural flavor and solid carbonation to cocktails.
